Substantial Scientific Flaws of Using Animals in Cancer Research, Part 1

From Sacred Cows and Golden Geese: The Human Cost of Experiments on Animals, by C. Ray Greek. MD and Jean Swingle Greek, DVM:

Thousands of times in the last 150 years, scientists have used the animal model to refute clinical knowledge...The reservoir of egregious examples is inexhaustible. Over a twenty-five year time period, in hops of developing new treatments, the NCI [National Cancer Institute] screened 40,000 plant species for antitumor activity in animals. Regardless of the results from animal studies, all the chemicals tested were too toxic or ineffective in humans. Forty thousand! The Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science reports: "This means despite 25 years of intensive research and positive results in animal models, not a single anti-tumor drug emerged from this work."

At least they gave animal testing a very ample opportunity to work. One wonders when they first spotted the trend? After five thousand failures? Ten thousand?
