The Zen of One Cat Washing

Watching a cat systematically wash herself from head to tail is as mindful and peaceful as any form of meditation I can imagine.

I also like that the subject of focus is sentient, aware, self-directed, and unique, not an abstraction. And as she engages in her ancient ritual, she is practicing a sort of meditation—and may gaze back at the human meditator, forming a feedback loop that builds compassion, trust, appreciation, and wonder, and gently expands consciousness.

Same effect watching birds preen. Or hamsters grooming. In fact, I've been watching some cockatiel preening for the last five minutes - and it is like meditation.

My favorite thing is watching them preen each other or when they let me join in. The look of contentment on their faces is so heartwarming and reminds me how all creatures want to participate in that kind of bonding.
