Objection #31

"My going vegan won't make a dent in the number of animals killed."

Does your refraining from arson make a dent in the overall arson rate?

But it actually will because you're talking about how many animals you'll eat over your life. Also, hopefully just by virtue of being vegan you'll influence others around you, if not to go vegan themselves, to at least eat some meatless meals. Further, your demand for veggie burgers might get them carried in places where people will notice and try them...

Good analogy with the arson!

Just you driving a hybrid makes no difference, but you hope it catches on.

Just you recycling makes no difference, but hopefully you teach by example.

Lots of women are murdered every year, but I've never heard "1,000 women were murdered this past year and I only killed one of them, that's less than one percent, it's statistically insignificant" as a good excuse.

I agree, Neva. My two main reponses to "but one person's actions don't make a difference in the global situation" are:

- Yes they will (especially if you influence others)

- It doesn't matter; do what's right.

Then there's the "starfish" response: They make a difference to the animals who won't be suffering and dying at human hands because of your actions.

>>> your demand for veggie burgers might get them carried in places where people will notice and try them...<<<

Yep. All those veggie versions of burgers, hot dogs, chicken patties, ice cream, and other products that we see in the stores are the result of the actions of lots of "one persons."
